Men in need of penis reconstruction could soon enjoy the benefits of a special ingredient: stem cells. A new study in rats shows that lacing a penis graft with adult stem cells yields better healing and sexual function than using the graft alone. The finding may point the way to improved treatments for a variety of human penile impairments.
Men with penis injuries, deformities, or severe Peyronie's disease—which causes excessive scarring that can curve or shrink the penis—sometimes need surgery to reconstruct their genitalia and restore their sexual function. Many receive a graft made of their own tissue, cadaver tissue, or pig intestines, but the surgery can cause complications, including erectile dysfunction.......


The creation of this blog came from a challenge posed to Masters students of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Beira Interior, Covilhã (Portugal), by Professor Doctor José Eduardo Cavaco within the course "Project in Biomedical Sciences''. The Biomedical Sciences combine the areas of Biology, Biochemistry, Physics, Management and Engineering, stimulating the capacity for self learning, critical thinking and adaptation to new technologies. Thus, the Biomedics integration in different areas of the national and international job market is possible as technical supporters in clinical environment, consulting, industry, education and research.     A terapia convencional para problemas penianos é feita através da cirurgia, um procedimento que pode resultar em complicações chegando a disfunção eréctil. Esta descoberta traz esperança para os homens, principalmente aqueles com necessidade de reconstrução do pênis, onde podem ser aproveitados os benefícios das células estaminais. Assim, abre-se um novo caminho no encontro de novas abordagens terapêuticas para problemas do órgão reprodutor masculino, uma terapia que apresenta baixos efeitos colaterais.
